Saying Yes: Finding My Voice in the WIRE

If you have read any prior WIRE articles, you may notice that this piece is a little more informal. It serves as a glimpse into the personality and authenticity behind our team. I am Michelle Monier, a former content writer for the WIRE and the incredibly excited new Managing Editor for our written content this year. Before we get into the rhythm of publishing traditional WIRE articles and features, I wanted to share my WIRE experience for those who want to see the human behind the words.

My journey started at WIB general meetings as an eager freshman trying to find my footing in the extensive sea of OCOB. I became a general member and applied for every growth opportunity that WIB presented. I had a mantra going into college, which I will summarize as “always say yes.” I applied for the WIRE under social media but was offered the role of content writer. Although I had never properly written for a journalistic publication, I forced myself to keep my word and say “yes.”

That is where my true journey started.

I was presented with opportunities I hadn’t realized were even options, such as interviewing professionals I was inspired by and talking to upperclassmen in WIB whom I aspired to become. I also learned that being a writer meant being a connector. By sharing the stories of fellow WIB members, whether through their projects, teams, or experiences, I connected them to our audience.

I had the opportunity to interview and coffee chat with professionals and alumni, not only building my network but also strengthening the relationship between WIB and external relations. I grew with our team, defining a new niche within the WIB community.

I knew I had a voice, but I never knew the joy of using it to showcase a community. Beyond illuminating the internal power of an organization like WIB, I started to truly understand the force of women’s empowerment communities, which is a strength that is built during our time at Cal Poly and then extends into the professional world.
